The number of
championship trial events may vary from year to year (and
possibly between RTV and CCV championships within a given
year). The championship is determined by totalling the championship
points won by each
competing driver, leaving aside the two lowest or missing scores. For
example, the
best 6 scores from 8 events or the
best 7 scores from 9 events. This allows for drivers to
compete in the championship whilst missing up to two events if they so
wish.
It is also a requirement that all championship contenders have
to set out at least one event during the course of the year.

Captain
John Brian Wilson RD* 1943-2000 (by Dave Cuthbert)
John Wilson was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, but soon moved to London.
He came to North Wales to continue his education at HMS Conway prior to
career in the Merchant Navy. This was an illustrious career, serving as
Captain for a number of major shipping lines, as well as gaining the
rank of Commander in the Naval Reserve, and being awarded the Reserve
Decoration with Bar.
His time at sea was followed by shore based maritime jobs, with a long
period in Hong Kong, before working from home for the Navy
Hydrographical Service; most recently revising the navigation book for
the South China Seas.
He settled in Wales and decided that he wanted to own a Land Rover and
so joined the North Wales Land Rover Club.
I soon came to know him as both a friend and customer, always looking
forward to delivering to him as we would inevitably get talking: first
about the job in hand, then more generally about Land Rovers
and the Club (and often onto much else).
The off road bug soon bit him, enjoying any chance to drive off road,
both trialing and green roading.
It took some time to get John to join the Committee, but we soon
realised the reason for his reluctance was merely that if he took
something on, he would want to do it to the best of his ability. It is
probably typical that the job he took on was co-ordinating the club's
help to councils in an emergency. He held strong views on the Club and
how it should be run, and was not afraid to express them.
In 2000 he attended the trial at Harlech. As he started the first
section he suffered a massive heart attack, and despite the sterling
efforts of many first aid trained members, did not survive. Those of us
who knew him will never forget him, but Steve Parkinson felt that he
should be remembered by those who were never lucky enough to meet him.
Steve had a trophy made to be presented in
John's memory to the winner of the CCV trial at Harlech each year.
The John Wilson Memorial Trophies should allow us all to remember a
stalwart club member, a possible future Chairman and for many of us a
good friend, who died doing the hobby he loved, whilst overlooking
Cardigan Bay from our most scenic site.
